Home security does not require an expensive overhaul to be effective. The fundamentals, good locks, adequate lighting, sensible habits, and an awareness of your property's vulnerabilities, make a substantial difference to how secure your home is against opportunistic crime. Whether you own your home or rent it, understanding what works and what to prioritise is the starting point.

Doors and entry points

The front door is the most common entry point for burglaries, and the quality of the lock matters considerably more than its appearance. Exterior lighting and visibility

Good external lighting is among the most effective and lowest-cost deterrents available. Motion-activated lights at the front and rear of the property make it less attractive to someone approaching in the dark. Visibility also works in the other direction. Trimming hedges and shrubs near windows and entry points removes the cover that makes an approach less visible from the street and from neighbouring properties. A clear sight line between your property and the road, or your neighbours' windows, reduces the opportunity for unobserved entry.

Alarms and deterrents

A burglar alarm, whether professionally monitored or self-monitored via a smartphone, signals that a property is actively protected. The visible presence of an alarm box or camera is itself a deterrent before any incident occurs. If you are a tenant, check your tenancy agreement and speak to your landlord before fitting any alarm system, as drilling or mounting equipment may require permission.

Timers that operate indoor lights while you are away create the impression of an occupied property, which is straightforward and effective during holidays or regular work travel.

Habits that matter year-round

Security measures are only effective when used consistently. Locking doors and windows, even when you are at home or stepping out briefly, removes the easiest opportunity a casual opportunist looks for. Keeping valuable items, including car keys, away from letterboxes and ground floor windows is equally straightforward.

When you are away for a period, ask a trusted neighbour to collect post and keep an eye on the property. Avoid publicising the timing of your absence on social media, and consider cancelling regular deliveries that might signal an empty home.
